Could you be one of our authors? Could you be one of our authors?

The quick answer is "Yes". We are looking for new writers all the time.

However: we are also looking for authors who can
  • work within established guidelines.
  • take advice.
  • work to deadlines if required.
  • and meet our strict quality requirements.
If you think you can do this then read on.

Why Write for Red Herring Games?

  • Firstly, and probably most importantly it pays!

    Consider this:

A novel can take anything from 6 months to 2 -3 years (or more)to write. Then you need to find an agent (not an easy task) then the agent needs to find a publisher.

Ignoring any up front payments, the publisher may offer 10% Net royalty payable twice yearly. On an average book retailing at 5.99, assuming the publisher probably sells it at half that to the book shops, and then gives you 10% of that, that still means you get less than 0.30 a copy sold. (Bearing in mind these are totally random figures Ė not based on anything remotely realistic.)

Assuming you sell 4,000 books a year, then you make a huge £1200! (But donít forget the agent has to take a cut of that.)

A typical murder mystery game takes around 17 hours to write. You need no agent.

Red-herring-games pays you a royalty of 30% on every game sold. (for ease letís say £4.50)

Assuming you sell 100 games a year then you get £450!

But Ė letís say you write 10 different games and they all sell 100 over the year then you get £4500!

And added to that we donít make you wait that long to get your money Ė we pay monthly, one month in arrears.

  • Secondly, it is a good way of getting your name known as an author.

    • Your name and photograph is shown on the website for every game listed.
    • Your name as the author is also on the game materials.
    • In the publishing business it is always who you know, and this gives you a chance for people to get to know your name.

  • Thirdly: we know what you need.

    • we have established templates for you to use
    • we are very approachable for help and assistance
    • we provide an editorial service (free of charge) as well as handling all the transactions and customer support.
    • we provide an author forum on our author accessible pages for you to exchange ideas, get feedback and support.
    • we offer you the chance to publicise yourself and your other work on our author pages.

PLEASE NOTE: We are not longer accepting authors who do not complete our mentoring scheme. Details of that are available on request.
